The Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF), also called "Número de Contribuinte", is a 9-digit tax identification number every individual interacting with the Portuguese state needs. It's the single most important ID you'll obtain in Portugal — required for:
NIFs are issued for life — once allocated you keep the same one forever.
Option 1 — In Portugal at a Finanças office or Loja do Cidadão Free for EU citizens. €10.20 for non-EU citizens who need a fiscal representative.
Option 2 — At the Portuguese consulate (from abroad) Free, but slow. Available in most consulates; submit form Mod. RV-1011 + passport copy. 4–8 weeks to issue.
Option 3 — Remotely via a fiscal representative (Bordr, NIF Online, e-residence.com) €70–€150 — most popular for non-EU clients. The representative handles everything; you receive a PDF certificate by email in 1–10 business days.
