Your passport must meet specific requirements for visa applications. Learn about validity, condition, biometric requirements, and common issues.

Passport Requirements

Your passport is the most critical document for any visa application. It must meet specific requirements to be accepted by embassies and immigration authorities.

General Requirements

Validity: Minimum 6 months beyond your intended travel date (12 months is recommended to avoid issues)
Blank Pages: At least 2-4 blank pages for visa stamps and stickers
Condition: Good condition with no damage, tears, water marks, or defacement
Biometric: Machine-readable passport required (most modern passports issued after 2006 are machine-readable)

Passport Photos

Recent photos (taken within the last 6 months)
White or light background (some countries require specific background colours)
Full face visible, eyes open, mouth closed
No glasses, hats, or head coverings (unless for religious or medical reasons)
Specific dimensions vary by embassy:
UK: 35mm x 45mm
Schengen countries: 35mm x 45mm
Some countries: 2 inches x 2 inches (51mm x 51mm)
Professional studio photos are recommended

Common Issues and Solutions

Expired or soon-to-expire passport: Renew immediately before starting your application. Passport offices can take 2-6 weeks for renewal.
Damaged passport: Must be replaced. Do not attempt to repair it yourself.
Name changes: If your name on the passport differs from other documents (due to marriage, legal name change), provide supporting legal documentation.
Lost passport: Report to police immediately, obtain a police report, and apply for a replacement.
Dual nationality: Some countries require you to apply with a specific passport. Check with your caseworker.

The entire bio page is visible including the machine-readable zone at the bottom
The scan is in colour, not black and white
All text is clearly legible
No shadows or reflections obscuring information
File format: PDF, JPG, or PNG
Maximum file size: 10MB

Our caseworkers will review your passport scan and advise if any issues need addressing before your visa application.

TIP: Start your passport renewal process well in advance if needed. Do not let passport issues delay your visa application. Some countries have expedited passport services for an additional fee.
